VIDEO: Practice starting up on the mountain

In the driving lessons, starting off on the mountain is of course practiced. But often there is simply not enough time to practice it thoroughly. The driving instructor focuses on more important things, such as parking or driving overland. Starting up on the mountain is often neglected. Doesn't matter, then just practice a little later!

Practice starting up on the mountain with the car

  • Starting up on a hill or on a slope is not as complicated as it seems. The only difficult thing is to find the right mix between clutch and gas so that the engine does not die. And since the car can roll backwards quickly on the mountain, many drivers panic that the car will bump into the cars behind them.
  • In order to practice starting up on the mountain in peace, it is best to look for an untravelled road on which you can practice starting off without being disturbed. In the urban area this is of course difficult, small streets a little outside are best.
  • Drive a little way down the rising road and bring the car to a stop on the slope. To do this, step on the clutch and the brake. Then take out gear and shift into neutral. Meanwhile, you stand with your right foot on the brake so that the car cannot roll away. Now apply the handbrake and take your foot off the brake pedal.
  • The car is now standing securely on the slope and cannot roll backwards while you start to pull away. Press the clutch and engage first gear. Keep your left foot on the clutch and step on the accelerator with your right foot. You don't have to press the brake because the handbrake is on. While you still keep this tightened, you let the clutch come off very lightly and at the same time carefully apply a little gas.
  • Start off quickly - this is how you practice it

So that you do not become a walking obstacle to traffic, you should quickly and quickly ...

  • Then slowly release the handbrake at the same time and accelerate so much that you can feel the car pulling forward. Let the clutch do this at the same time. Accelerate and then shift into second gear if necessary. You did it already!
