Make a jug out of ceramic

Even if you have no experience in pottery, you can make a jug yourself. When you learn to make pottery, you cannot work on a disc right away, but first deal with the building-up ceramics.

Manufacture ceramic utensils yourself

When working with volume it is important that you knead or beat this well beforehand so that the air bubbles can escape. Because air bubbles in the clay can cause your handmade ceramic jug to burst in the event of a fire. There are different types of clay, which differ in color and according to their proportion of chamotte. Use a medium fireclay clay for the ceramic structure of a jug.

  • Cut the required piece of clay from the block with a cutting wire.
  • Put a piece of newspaper or linen on a table and carefully knead the clay on it.
  • First, make the base for your ceramic jug by removing a piece of the clay and rolling it out about 0.5 centimeters thick.
  • Now place an object of use on it that is about the size you want your ceramic jug to be. A bulbous tea or coffee pot, for example, is suitable for this.
  • Pizza - pottery plate yourself

It's not that easy, but with a little talent you can make a pizza plate ...

  • Press the jug onto the surface so that an imprint remains on the clay. Then cut out the base and place it on the table edge disc to build the jug. This makes your work easier because you have to keep turning your workpiece.
  • Alternatively, you can use a saucepan that you turn upside down.

Making a jug in ceramic build-up

  • For the construction of the ceramic jug you need so-called slip to connect individual pieces of clay, which you can easily make yourself from clay and water.
  • Take a sealable plastic container and put a few small pieces of clay in it so that the bottom is covered. Now pour boiling water over the clay and stir the mixture to a creamy consistency.
  • Let the tea or coffee pot stand in front of you as a guide for the shape of the mug. You now build the jug step by step, with individual layers of bulges, which you always have to roughen thoroughly beforehand and then brush on with the slip.
  • Now roll out a bead of clay about 1 centimeter thick, which should be as long as the bottom of the jug.
  • Take a fork and use it to rough up the outer edge of the floor. Brush the roughened surface generously with slurry and then place the bead on it. Then carefully smear the connection points with your finger or a modeling stick. You can also use some water for this.
  • Now continue layer by layer until your ceramic mug is the size you want.

Let your handmade ceramic jug dry slowly and evenly in a cool room for about a week before you put it to burn.
