General information on replacing the facade panels

  • The panels are usually attached to a wooden substructure. When these are nailed to it, the nails are covered by the plate above. If you do not want to remove a lot of plates over a large area, you will need a repair iron to remove the nails.
  • Once the damaged facade panels are removed you can slide new ones in place of the damaged ones, but you can Do not nail them, because over the places where you would have to hammer in the nails are the overlying ones Facade panels. You can glue the new boards with special glue or, as a professional would do, attach them with hooks. The attachment with hooks is definitely safe and durable.

So you can swap the boards

  • The patch iron is a long thin metal piece with notches and a hook. Slide the thin end under the damaged plate but over the undamaged plate below.
  • Hang one of the notches on a nail that will hold the damaged plate. Hit the hook on the repair iron with a hammer to pull the nail out. Slate facade panels are usually attached with three nails. Remove all nails and all parts of the damaged plate.
  • Now nail the repair hooks (storm clips) to the battens. These hooks are thin metal strips, it is no problem to slide the new plate over this thin sheet of metal. When the new board is in place, the edges of the storm clips protrude from under the board.

  • Score the plate at the point. Bend the bracket around the plate. Cut the metal strip so far that only a small piece can be seen above the plate.
  • The advantage of this method is that the staples are less noticeable than nails. What is more important, however, is that you could only nail the replacement facade panels so that the nail holes remain open. So moisture would penetrate. The staples will not perforate any plates.
