What you need:

  • volume
  • knife
  • wire
  • Rolling pin

You can work a vase either in the bulge technique from many individual, stacked clay rolls or with a straight wall as a side part.

Make flower vases from clay slabs

  1. You can easily assemble smaller flower vases in a cylindrical or square shape from clay plates.
  2. Before you get the volume edit, knead it thoroughly so that it no longer contains any air holes. You can also put a wooden board on the floor and then throw the clay on it several times with all your might.
  3. Use the rolling pin to roll out the clay about an inch thick.
  4. For the bottom of the vase, cut out a round plate of the desired size.
  5. Coffee: making cups out of clay - this is how it works

The dream of every coffee drinker is surely their own and maybe also ...

  6. Cut another square plate for the side part, the length of which corresponds to the circumference of the base plate, and put the parts together.
  7. The sidewall shouldn't get too high or it won't be able to be held upright until the clay has dried sufficiently.
  8. Now cut a smaller lump out of the clay with wire and shape it into a thin bead.
  9. Place the bead on the inside of the vase base and spread it as a connecting piece between the base and side plate until no transition can be seen.
  10. After firing, you need to glaze flower vases particularly thoroughly from the inside so that they are waterproof.

Pottery vessels using the bead technique

  1. If you stack up individual beads of clay, you can also make flower vases in various round and bulbous shapes.
  2. For this, too, first cut out a round plate as a base.
  3. Roll the first bead about 1.5 cm in diameter and place it around the outside of the plate.
  4. Spread the clay so thoroughly at the seam that a seam can hardly be seen afterwards.
  5. Now arrange the next beads on top, but move the seams a few centimeters to the left or right and carefully smooth the transitions.
  6. If you want to make flower vases that taper towards the top, place the bulge at this point slightly offset inwards. You can also use small offsets to make the vase widen again.
  7. Allow your flower vases to dry thoroughly after modeling and, after firing, remember to glaze them extra thick on the inside.
