Use a plastic slot

Different shafts are required at each house. Usually there is also a plastic shaft system. These systems are often superior to conventional designs, but only if you choose the right system.

You should keep this in mind with the shaft

There are a few factors to consider when choosing the right plastic manhole.

  • Think about which medium will flow in the shaft and in what concentration. Of course, it makes a difference whether it will contain normal domestic sewage or highly concentrated acids or Food. There are also different demands on shafts in which there is fresh water than on those in which there is waste water. Fresh water must not be polluted by the plastic, waste water can contain substances that attack it.

Also note the temperatures that the shaft will be exposed to. What about frost in winter? How about hot liquids? You have to consider all of this when building manholes.

Suitable plastics for manholes

Most manholes are made of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

  • PE is mostly used for fresh water and conventional sewer pipes. Since water pipes are mostly made of PE these days, it is advisable to use this material to manufacture the manholes. There are fewer problems with the tightness if everything is made of the same material. Manholes made of the material should not be exposed to temperatures above 80 ° C. PE can become brittle in sunlight, so a PE shaft should be protected from light.
  • Gluing PP - this is how glue stays bombproof with polypropylene

There are materials that actually cannot be glued at all. You belong ...

  • You should use PP if you want to dispose of liquids that attack other materials or if the wastewater is very hot. The material has a higher stiffness, strength and hardness than PE and is therefore also mechanically strongest. It is also resistant to organic solvents and fats. It can be used in a temperature range of up to 110 ° C, but becomes brittle when it is cold.
  • PVC is also a suitable plastic for manholes, but this material contains plasticizers that evaporate. This is questionable with fresh water. In addition, the material can become brittle when the plasticizers evaporate. It is resistant to many acids and solvents, but it dissolves in acetone, benzene, chloroform, ether and concentrated hydrochloric acid. PVC is less inflammable than PP and PE, but it burns with the development of highly toxic gases.

So you need to be very careful when choosing the right material. You will only have no problems for a long time if you choose the right plastic for your manhole.
