Differences between painting roles

In the hardware store you will quickly find out that there are very different roles for painters and you will probably be wondering which role is intended for which use.

  • Paint rollers that are about as thick as your thumb are often called radiator rollers. The name comes from the fact that you can use it to paint behind radiators. You will need this type of roller whenever you are painting in tight spaces. The rollers are also excellent for use in corners.
  • Sheepskin rolls, or rather painter rolls with plush cover, are intended to walls to be painted with emulsion paint. If you look closely, you will see that there are very different pile lengths. On the roll and the color there is usually an indication of which roll is intended for which color.
  • As a rule of thumb, you can remember that the pile length should be shorter, the stronger the color that is to be processed with it. When in doubt, always choose the short pile length.
  • Foam rubber paint rollers that are a little over the thickness of a thumb are intended for lacquer paints. Here you have to study both the print on the paint can and the instruction leaflet on the paint roller. Some paints must be applied with a paint roller, others may not. Effect paint is sometimes even tailored to a very specific role.

Foam rubber rollers with structures are not paint rollers in the traditional sense. With these, structures are rolled into special plaster or colors are given textures.

Use of rollers for painting

No matter whether you use a paint roller for painting or for To brush from walls, the important thing is not to soak the roll with paint.

  • So that you do not work with too much paint, roll the paint roller over a grid when you apply thin emulsion paint. These are often sold with the rollers in a set and can be hung in the paint bucket in such a way that the paint flows back into the bucket when it is wiped off.
  • With thick paints or solid paint, just roll gently over the surface of the paint, that's enough. If the painter's roller is soaked with too much paint, you can also strip off this paint on a grid.
  • Lacquer paints are poured into a special tub that has a recess for the paint and a structured sloping surface. Pick up the paint by gently rolling the paint roller over the surface of the paint and then over the textured part.

Once you have the right amount of paint on the painter's roller, you need to roll it off on the surface to be painted.

Cleaning of paint rollers

Usually, paint rollers are only used for water-soluble paints, so cleaning can be done with water. Rolls that have come into contact with solvent-based paints must be soaked with brush cleaner, which makes the paint water-soluble. After treatment with brush cleaner, this painter's roller, which every other roller, is cleaned too. It works like this:

  1. Rinse the paint rollers thoroughly under running water and squeeze out the paint with your hands. Put some washing-up liquid on the paint roller, lather it and rinse thoroughly again.
  2. Squeeze the paint roller out well and pull the roller off the handle. Most of the time, the color has also settled around the axis of the holder. This shouldn't happen if you've used the roll properly beforehand, but amateur wallpaperers usually have a painter's roll smeared with paint when they finish painting. Now wash the roll and the holder again thoroughly separately.
  3. Since some paint usually remains in the paint rollers, it does not make sense to use the roller to paint a different color than the one previously used. You could introduce interesting but undesirable color reflections into the surface to be painted, so take a separate role for each color.

It is difficult and time-consuming to clean a painter's roller so that it is completely color-free again. Since the rolls are reasonably priced, you shouldn't put too much energy into cleaning them.
