Money is often tight in training. A commuter flat rate would be just right. Even people in training often have to drive several kilometers. A commuter allowance could help, but there are other solutions.
Commuter flat-rate is only available if you pay taxes
- There is no flat-rate commuter allowance for trainees. A commuter allowance is from Tax office hardened and tempered.
- You get this money back as overpaid taxes.
- Or you can apply for an allowance, which is then added to the books on a monthly basis.
- Since this commuter lump sum goes beyond tax, but trainees do not pay any tax due to their rather low income, the commuter lump sum is out of the question for you.

There is other financial aid during the training
Those who can get to the training center by public transport often receive a monthly pass for trainees. This is much lower in price than the normal tariff. It is important that you deal with the respective conditions of the respective transport company.
- It is possible that you are only allowed to use them to a limited extent. This monthly pass is also not transferable.
- If you would like to purchase the trainee monthly card, you should take a photo, your ID, and the training contract or equivalent proof with you to apply.
Apprenticeship without commuter allowance - but it is easier to apply for child benefit
Even if you as a trainee do not benefit from a commuter allowance, there are other options for obtaining support from the state.
- If it is your first education and you are not over 25 years old, your parents can apply for child benefit.
- As of 2012, it no longer matters how high the income is. You can also apply for additional funds via BAB (vocational training assistance). To do this, however, you still have to live with your parents, or the length of the journey to the apprenticeship place is considered unreasonable from the parental home.
