Skype couldn't connect

To use Skype it is important to have an active internet connection. Even so, the error message "Skype could not establish a connection" may appear. Only a few steps are necessary to clarify what the error is and how to fix it.

Connect to the internet

Make sure that your internet connection is active and that Skype is not blocked by the firewall and thus cannot establish a connection.

1. To do this, open the Control Panel and select "Windows Firewall".
2. In the menu on the left it says "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall". After you have selected this, a list opens.
3. Now select Skype from the list and tick both "Home / Work (private)" and "Public". Confirm the changes with "OK".

4. Then start Skype and log in as usual. If a connection has now been established, you can use Skype again without restrictions.

Skype could not establish a connection

• If Skype cannot establish a connection, your Internet connection, firewall and other blocking applications are set correctly, the connection problem is usually with Skype. This can be a server overload, technical maintenance or other work on the system.
• Occasionally, Skype was unable to establish a connection if an active connection with Skype was recently terminated. It can happen that the router maintains this connection and thus blocks another one. Restart the router via your router settings. Please note that this will interrupt your Internet connection and you will be temporarily unavailable. Then open Skype and the connection should be able to be re-established.
• If the same error occurs several times, but there are no problems connecting to Skype from other Internet connections, you should consider updating your Skype. You can get the free version at Skype download and install.
