In the service sector it has always been customary to show a tip for good service. But this is seldom as necessary as when visiting the hairdresser.

The tip when visiting the hairdresser is part of the salary

  • There is hardly any other industry in which employees are so dependent on tips to secure their livelihood as the hairdresser around the corner. In most cases, the salary that the hairdressers receive from their employer is so low that those affected cannot get very far with their earnings alone. There are quite a few who, despite an eight-hour working day, still depend on social benefits.
  • Unfortunately, some employers take advantage of the fact that a tip is paid. As a result, the hairdresser ultimately has a surcharge on the wages for which the owner of the hairdressing salon does not have to pay. Only in this way is it possible for workers who are enthusiastic about this profession to be found with below-average wages.

Correctly transferring the "pocket money"

  • If you want to express your satisfaction with the service provided to you in the form of a tip, do so make sure that you personally pass this on to the person or persons who have contributed to your new head of hair permit. This should be done casually with a thank you note. The best way to do this is to use the wide pockets of the hairdressers' work clothing to drop whatever amount you think is appropriate.
  • As a matter of principle, avoid giving the owner such attention, even if they have served you personally. This would truly be the least appropriate here, as this attention should always be reserved for the wage earners of this company.
  • If possible, you should never have your tip withheld during the payment process at the checkout. After all, it may well be forgotten to give it to the people who deserve it.

  • The amount of a tip at the hairdresser's should be estimated by you depending on the scope of the work carried out on you. If you are only able to give a negligible amount in recognition, give nothing at all. This is less humiliating than handing over a 'penny' and waiting for a thank you.
