VGA output to SCART input

VGA and SCART are not as dissimilar as many think. Both connections transmit an analog signal. The input and output are therefore electrically compatible. Only the sound cannot be transmitted via VGA.

SCART can be split into the video signal and the two audio signals.
SCART can be split into the video signal and the two audio signals.

The VGA output

  • The VGA output on most laptops or other devices is a way of getting an analog video signal out of the device. VGA stands for Video Graphics array. The connection was introduced by IBM in 1987.
  • As an analog connection, the video signal of the graphic card first converted into an analog video signal for the VGA output. This naturally results in conversion losses that can reduce the image quality. The quality also decreases with increasing cable length - so it's best to just use it cablethat are no longer than necessary.

The SCART input

  • The SCART connector is based on a combination of video signal (yellow) and stereo sound signal (red = left, white = right) in one connector. It also works analog, which enables direct adaptation from VGA to SCART. All you need is a SCART adapter that divides the input back into the 3 channels (video, sound l / r). Then you can fill the SCART input directly with a suitable cable from VGA to S-Video.
  • In this case, you have to take the audio signal from another source and then recombine it at the SCART input.

Even if the two connections are electrically identical, there is still a possible problem area: the refresh rate. Connect the VGA output e.g. B. a laptop with the SCART input of a tube TV, this is usually not identical. The LCDDisplay the laptop typically operates at 60 Hz, while the television is likely to use 50 Hz. Either you then adjust the refresh rate on one of the devices or you cannot establish this connection directly. LCD TVs with SCART inputs usually do not have this problem.
