Depending on the insurance, different deadlines sometimes apply

The notice period to be observed depends less on the insurer in particular and more on the type of coverage in general. The deadline is always stipulated in the contract.

• You can find information about the notice period with which you can terminate the contract in the terms and conditions of the respective contract. There is a separate point that deals with both the termination of the contract and the notice periods.

• Many contracts can be terminated with a period of three months prior to the end of the contract. This usually applies, for example, to most property insurance, such as household effects, Liability or Accident insurance.

• Some contracts can also be terminated with one month's notice to the end of any month. As a rule, this applies to types in which people are insured, such as capital and private pension insurance.

What to watch out for in order to comply with the notice period

• It is important to know that the contract is almost always extended by the same term as before if you miss the last possible day to cancel. It is therefore best to make a note of such appointments.

• You should not necessarily send the cancellation on the last possible day. Because you must of course also observe the delivery times, especially since the cancellation must be received by the insurer on the last possible day and does not have to be sent first.

• It is best to send the letter of termination in advance by FAX and then by registered mail. This way you can ensure that the termination arrives on time and at the same time you have evidence that you have actually terminated.
