If you want to buy a projector with a TV tuner, you can do without a flat screen TV and have a large picture in a high resolution. However, before making this purchase you should consider whether you can really do without the television.
A beamer projects any image on a white wall or on a screen that you can set into the ceiling or stretch using a map stand. You can also use such a device to watch TV or movies.
A TV tuner is necessary to watch TV
- A beamer is purely a projection device. It has no receiving part. You cannot watch TV with it unless you operate a receiver to receive cable-, satellite or terrestrial television.
- An alternative is a device with a built-in TV tuner. This is available from various manufacturers such as Klarstein or Skytronics. Brand manufacturers such as Panasonic, Sony or LG do not offer this device combination. If you want to buy a device from these brands, you only have to use an external receiver.
- The device should be very bright so that you can see a picture even in daylight. Full HD resolution is just as mandatory as an HDMI connection.
- Please also note that the devices work with a lamp that must be replaced after 2,000 to 5,000 operating hours. Depending on the model, this can cost several hundred euros. Because the lamp gets very hot, it needs to be cooled. As a result, the operating noise of a projector is quite loud.

What you should know before buying a projector
- Buying a projector with a TV tuner is not enough, because you have no sound. You need an AV receiver that you have to connect to the device.
- Modern devices have an HDMI connection with which the sound is transmitted digitally. This makes it possible to watch movies and TV shows in 5.1 or 7.1. Also keep in mind that whenever you want to watch TV, you have to install the screen and switch on the projector and the AV receiver.
- In the case of devices that do not have sufficient light intensity, it is also necessary to darken the room. Very bright devices are more expensive than a television set.
You have to weigh yourself whether it is worth buying a projector for you. Most customers decide to buy a television and a projector, as watching films and TV shows with the latter is quite time-consuming and also noisy.
