Subwoofer with Y-cable
You usually connect a subwoofer with a cinch cable or you clip the cable into the connections of the AV receiver. However, you can also use a Y-cable. This has two cinch plugs at one end. Your subwoofer must have two inputs for this.
There are many different subwoofers that you can connect to an AV receiver to get a rich output of the bass. High-quality models have two inputs, each of which can be plugged into a cinch cable. There are two amplifiers built in to give you more power. However, AV receivers only have one output for the subwoofer. You can recognize this by the designation 5.1 or 7.1 or, in stereo mode, 2.1. The "one" stands for the subwoofer output.
The subwoofer is connected to the AV receiver
- A subwoofer is a bass box that amplifies the bass sound and can be connected to an AV receiver that is designed to operate a bass box. This must have a corresponding exit.
- There are different systems that describe the number of boxes. 2.1 is for stereo operation with a bass box, 5.1 and 7.1 systems work in Dolby Surround mode.
The Y-cable is necessary for high-quality bass boxes
- If you buy a subwoofer that has two inputs, you must use a Y-cable. This is a cinch cable, which has one connection for the output of the receiver and two connections for the input of the subwoofer.
- The plugs are color-coded or labeled accordingly. The colors can vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but red and black are often used.
- If you use a normal cinch cable for a subwoofer that has two inputs, you will not be able to use the full power of the bass box. Your device only works with an amplifier.
