So-called twist-off jars are ideal for packing homemade jams or spice pastes. If you sterilize these, they can boil down well in old jars from cucumbers, pimples or jam.

How to sterilize twist-off jars

Twist-off jars from purchased products are the cheapest way to get canning jars. There are just a few things you need to consider

  1. Use only perfect jars with an undamaged lid. If you had to pry it open or punch a hole in it to open the jar, you will no longer be able to use the jars and lids.
  2. Only use the lids that were originally on the jar. Mark the lid and jar with a waterproof pen so that you can see this when the label is removed from the jar.
  3. Not all jars are suitable for preserving; jars with cardboard seals, such as nut nougat cream, can be disposed of. Inspect the rubber in the glasses, it must not have any recognizable defects or even traces of mold.
  4. Glasses from the dishwasher are sufficiently sterile. If you use these jars while they are still warm from the dishwasher or close them when they are warm, they will remain sterile. So you always have the right lid for the glass.

  6. If you don't have a dishwasher, put the cleanly rinsed glasses and the lids open in a saucepan with water and boil them for 10 minutes. Here, too, either fill it up immediately, while it is still hot, or close it when it is hot.
  7. dry Never remove the jars after sterilization, residual moisture in the jar is not a problem.
  8. If you are boiling with pre-sterilized jars, place the jars on a cloth and open the lid. The lid must crack a bit when opening, otherwise it won't be tight. You must no longer use leaky jars and lids.
  9. Pour boiling water into each jar, put the lid on and turn the jar upside down. This is how you recognize leaks and the glasses are guaranteed sterile. Caution hot! Wear gloves and a freezer bag over them, otherwise hot water can penetrate through the glove.
  10. Open the twist off jars and only empty them immediately before filling. If you like, you can fill this with a little high-proof schnapps, close it and turn it around briefly. This also sterilizes and refines the aroma of jams.

Correctly sterilized twist-off jars are harmless and can be used over and over again. The contents remain stable because a vacuum is created in the glass that closes the lid, but only if you do not fill it all the way to the brim. It has to be approx. 2 cm of air must be enclosed, otherwise the negative pressure does not arise.
