Searching for clues if the window does not close properly

  • Looking for the cause of why your window does not close properly, proceed very systematically. First of all, when you open or close the window, you will notice whether it closes properly or whether it is touching a corner. If you are lucky, you can remedy the problem by tightening or loosening the adjusting screw on the fitting. You will find the screw in the upper corner directly in the window fitting. If the window still does not close properly, check whether it is resting properly on the frame.
  • To do this, you close the window slowly, with a lot of feeling, but don't lock it yet. Now press the window lightly against the frame at the corners to check whether it really fits snugly. You will quickly see why the window does not close properly. With old wooden windows you can still make do with a rebate plane, with the new windows that is usually no longer possible. But there is still an easier way.

Adjusting screw or sealing tape will helpĀ

  • Now check how much air the window leaves to the frame if you just press it down lightly. Correspondingly, you can obtain a sealing tape to glue into the window frame at the nearest hardware store. Now use this in such a way that your window rests evenly in the frame again. If you close it now, the window closes properly again, the window and frame are tightly seated again.
  • If your window still doesn't close properly, things will get tricky. Not many sources of error remain. You can still check the rubber seals, the glazing of the window and the cover or plaster strips at the transition from the window frame to the wall or to the windowsill. You can use it to locate other cold bridges, but they can hardly be remedied. You must then contact a specialist.
