Typical roles between men and women

Women belong at the stove, men bring the money home - this is the typical distribution of roles. But some men prefer to be at the stove, while many women like to pursue a career. It is possible today. A few decades ago it would have been a problem.

Typical man, typical woman

Whether or not the woman belongs behind the stove is a controversial and often a joke question today. It used to be a fact. For many centuries, if you look at the entire history of mankind, the man was in charge. The reasons for this are varied and result from early social developments, an early establishment of the so-called patriarchy and a denigration of the Feminine, which can even be found in the Bible: There it is the weak Eve who first allows herself to be seduced and then seduces Adam to sin, which is why both are expelled from Paradise will. This image of the lustful, unpredictable and in her own way dangerous woman was consolidated over the Middle Ages and created myths such as the myth of the uterus moving through the body, biting into the brain and leading to hysteria leads. In short: women were not even considered sane for a long time. Only slowly, through the Enlightenment to the modern age, did their general status improve. But at the beginning of the 20th In the 20th century, women in Germany weren't even allowed to vote. What has happened since then?

The end of the classic distribution of roles

  • Early 20th In the 19th century, the so-called suffragettes formed the first major women's movement. They campaigned for the right to vote (Suffrage = English for "right to vote") and thus triggered a real wave. In 1919, German women were also allowed to vote for the first time.
  • This was a first step towards equality. The second step was certainly the commitment of the so-called rubble women, who held their positions at home in the two world wars and even helped with the reconstruction.
  • But with the economic miracle came the return to the old traditionality. As in the Third Reich, but less propagandistically, women were pushed into the role of mother and housewife. This was encouraged by the media, among other things, especially by the 1950s advertising showing preppy, chic, happy women in the kitchen.
  • This role model came to an end at the end of the sixties. In the course of the student movement, women also organized themselves and demanded change in the dusty society. Abortion rights in particular became the focus of discussion at the time.

  • In 1971 the star drew public attention to this with the campaign "My belly belongs to me". But of course other issues also preoccupied the women's rights activists, then called "emancies". They clearly demanded to be on an equal footing with men in every respect, i.e. in education, profession, salary and family.
  • They also had success with that. Through luminaries like Alice Schwarzer and many followers who were no longer ready to take on the image of the Fulfilling the typical role distribution of men and women, held many in the following decades Overturns ready.
  • Girls who were born in the late eighties today often report that they have never come into contact with gender discrimination. This is certainly an accomplishment of the second wave of the women's movement in the late sixties.
  • Of course, there are still discrepancies today. Men who do the same jobs as women often still earn more, and the father who stays at home and gives up a career is still an exception. Nevertheless, something noteworthy has happened for society as a whole.

The way into the male crisis

When it comes to the typical distribution of roles, one should not only look at the issue from the perspective of women. Because if a woman's behavior changes, it naturally affects the man as well. In a nutshell, this resulted in the following development:

  • After the revolts of the 68s, many women wanted to enjoy their newly won rights. Numerous marriages broke up as a result, but the image of the independent, single woman was also becoming more and more established.
  • So we speak of the 30-year-olds today as the "fatherless generation", because for the first time many children there grew up only with their mothers. As a result, the boys lacked a male role model and they also had to experience that women and girls took on or wanted to do their tasks in many areas.
  • And so it came to what sociologists today call the crisis of masculinity. The modern man no longer has a fixed understanding of roles and feels insecure. Because of the growing demands of women, he believes that he has to be everything at the same time: good Father, affectionate lover, hands-on husband, bag bearer, money earner, househusband, cook and Cleaner.

Due to the resulting uncertainty, the image of the "tearful" man has established itself, which has resulted in a sensational development.

Third wave feminism

  • A new feminism has been establishing itself more and more since the mid-2000s. His representatives see themselves as having arrived at equality and as self-confident enough to wish the right man back.
  • According to the motto "strong women need strong men", the pupils of the fatherless generation are pulled through the cocoa without restraint. The woman shows herself to be self-confident and sexually open (the book "Wetlands") and wants a man who can take on her. Softies and women who understand women are no longer in demand. But what does it mean?
  • Amazingly, a partial return to the traditional image of the family. Many women nowadays voluntarily withdraw into housewife life in order to leave the role of head of the family to the man, simply because they find that more attractive.
  • Of course, old-school women's rights activists view this development with concern. But it is by no means the case that the young women let themselves be undermined again. From a scientific point of view, it is also questionable whether the modern man will become an "alpha male" again through the woman's voluntary withdrawal.
