VIDEO: Car: Jump-start

There are a number of ways to help you get started. In any case, you must select a traffic area for your experiment on which you do not present a public obstacle and do not have to cross a street. Before the start of the campaign, arrange a show of hands with your helpers for "ok.", "Halt" etc. If necessary, set up a warning triangle.

Give jump-start with the help of muscle power

  1. The most straightforward option is pushing with manual transmission vehicles using muscle power. This is useful if the starter is defective or the battery is almost empty.
  2. Talk to at least two strong helpers, sit down in your vehicle, put the 2nd Put in gear and turn the ignition key to the ignition position.
  3. In order to give a successful jump start, the helpers get the car going by pushing it. At a bit of speed, engage briefly and accelerate a little. If the car starts, let go of the clutch and try the engine keep going so that this energy charges the alternator. If it doesn't work the first time, try again after a short break.
  4. Caution! If you have a vehicle with a catalytic converter (KAT), it must be cold when you push it, otherwise fuel can run into the hot catalytic converter and damage it.
  5. Jump-starting with diesel - that is to be considered

Towing another car to give jump start

Another possibility is to tow another car. This also works when the battery is completely empty.

  1. If you connect both vehicles with a tow rope or rod, switch on the hazard warning lights.
  2. The towing vehicle starts off slowly. Make sure that the rope is taut and do not brake unnecessarily. This can lead to damage to the towing vehicle. Drive carefully as if you loaded raw eggs.
  3. Switch on the ignition, insert the 2. Engage the gear, engage the clutch briefly. At approx. At 20-30 km / h release the clutch and carefully accelerate.
  4. If your car starts, give the driver of the towing vehicle a sign to stop him. Remove the tow rope. Let the engine run to allow the alternator to charge.
  5. Caution! Automatic vehicles cannot be towed. With automatic vehicles you have to use other possibilities to give jump start.

Use a jump start cable to jump-start

A jump-start cable is also a way of giving jump-start help with the help of a third-party vehicle

  1. Turn off any power consumption (ex. B. Radio) off.
  2. Position both vehicles so that the batteries are as close as possible but the bodies are not touching. That would lead to a short circuit, possibly even cause a fire.
  3. Now clamp one end of the red cable first to the positive terminal of your battery (receiver vehicle; Caution! Take into account rotating parts later.), Then the other end to the positive terminal of the donor battery. If the battery is dirty, you can still see the positive pole, it is thicker.
  4. Now clamp one end of the black cable to the negative pole (it is thinner) of the donor battery and the other end in your vehicle to a solid metal part (never to the battery!).
  5. The donor starts his vehicle and lets the engine run.
  6. If your engine starts when you try to start, the jump start has been successful and the donor can switch off an engine. If not, he'll have to let it go for a while.
  7. Now switch on a "power guzzler" in your vehicle to protect your electronics from possible overvoltage.
  8. If the jump start was successful, dismantle the required parts from your vehicle in this order and note that they may be hot:
  • first (!) the black cable from the massive metal part,
  • then the remaining terminals of the jump start cable.
  • Switch off the "power guzzler" again.

You should now drive for at least an hour to charge the battery.
