Build the headboard of the bed yourself

An upholstered headboard on the bed is nice and comfortable. You can build and upholster such parts yourself. It's pretty easy.

What you need:

  • board
  • Foam rubber
  • Cotton fleece
  • velvet
  • Double-sided tape
  • Stable tape
  • High-speed nailer

Preparatory work for the headboard of the bed

Before you build an upholstered headboard yourself, you should plan a little:

  • You have to align with the crowds according to the headboard that you have or according to the dimensions of the bed. You can often easily upholster an existing headboard afterwards.
  • Determine the dimensions of a board that will become the headboard. The cushion should only start above the mattress. The fabric, on the other hand, should reach below the top edge of the mattress.
  • Choose a fairly firm foam rubber that will serve as a cushion. This should be 2 to 4 inches thick and as large as the area you want to cushion.
  • The height of the fabric must go from the top of the headboard to roughly the bottom of the mattress. Add the thickness of the cushion, the thickness of the board and 10 for the envelope. The width is the width of the headboard plus twice the thickness of the foam rubber plus twice the thickness of the board plus 20 cm for the envelope.

  • You need the dimensions of the foam rubber for the wadding fleece. You will also need sturdy tape that goes around the area you are upholstering.

Now you can start building the headboard yourself

Build the headboard yourself

  1. Put the headboard against the bed. Now hold the foam rubber piece on it.
  2. Check whether the dimensions of the foam rubber meet your requirements for the upholstery. You can still remove it again and change the dimensions.
  3. Glue the foam rubber to the headboard of the bed using double-sided tape.
  4. Now stop the velvet. It should cover the foam rubber and go around the top and approx. 10 cm can be knocked over the headboard. The sides should protrude equally far on both sides.
  5. Check that everything fits and make appropriate markings on the velvet and headboard that you build yourself.
  6. Dismantle the head section again. Spread out the velvet. Put the cotton wool on top and pull the edges a little thinner. This increases the area of ​​the wadding.
  7. Now place the headboard with the foam rubber on the cotton wool. Check whether the markings are correct.
  8. Secure the velvet on the back of the headboard with some clamps. In doing so, stretch the velvet tightly around the edges.
  9. Now place the tape on the edge of the velvet and nail everything down well.
  10. Turn the headboard over. Fold the velvet on the open side approx. 1cm inwards and staple this edge too.

Now you can attach the headboard to the bed. So it's not difficult to build such a headboard yourself.
