Set up a hydraulic lift
A hydraulic lift must be safe. Anyone who frequently wants to inspect or maintain a vehicle from below is dependent on a lifting device or an assembly pit. A hydraulic lifting platform is complex, but saves climbing into the pit. It must not pose a safety risk when using it.

Every hydraulic machine has the same principle
Liquids have the property that they cannot be squeezed. If you put a liquid under pressure, it transfers the pressure undiminished to the environment. The working principle of every hydraulic machine is based on this.
- To make use of this property, a pump is used in technology, which can deliver a thin oil at high pressure. The oil is fed through high-strength hoses to a cylinder in which there is a piston with a blocked rod. The pressure of the oil moves the piston in the cylinder, the force can be used to push the piston rod. The hydraulic lift is one of many applications.
- With a simple hydraulic formula it is possible to calculate which pressure is required at which piston diameter in order to overcome a calculated load. That said, you need a hydraulic pump that can generate enough pressure and a hydraulic cylinder that is long enough and strong enough for your purpose.
This is how you can build a lift
- The frame should look like this: The two cross members that reach under the car are rigidly welded together at the rear. The hydraulic cylinder engages in the middle of this cross member. He pushes the lifting device upwards in a massive, vertical guide rail. To prevent tipping, the frame must be supported at least as wide as the length of the traverses.
- Choose a telescopic cylinder that can extend far enough to create enough space under the vehicle to work. Embedding the traverses in the floor makes it easier to drive on and brings about 10 cm gain in height. If you have a cylinder that is too short, you can help yourself by locking the lift after the first lift and the cylinder is retracted and adjusted. Then you need a double acting cylinder.
- For the lift, build a safety latch on the guide rail, which automatically locks in at a distance of 10 cm. To lower the load, it must then be disengaged by hand. It is forbidden to make it ineffective. The control unit should hang directly on the device. The hydraulic pump with the oil tank can be set up separately.
