Build a polishing block yourself from a sanding block

If you only want to polish something occasionally, you don't need to buy a buffing stand. You can build such a buck yourself. Depending on the equipment of your workshop, you only need to buy polishing discs and polishing agents.

Basics of the polishing block

  • A polishing block consists of two polishing discs that are mounted to the right and left of the motor unit. The two disks naturally rotate in opposite directions.
  • The machine should be in a stable position so that you can press the parts to be polished firmly against the polishing pad.
  • The motor power should not be too tight, because you brake the motor while polishing. Less than 500 W is hardly of any use.
  • Pay attention to the short operating time, because polishing takes a long time. In this respect, you can only polish small parts with a drill or you have to constantly take breaks from work.
  • Pay attention to the storage of the tool holders. The discs must run without imbalance. Grinding machines generally have this property, while drilling machines can have the Storage due to the pressure you exert while polishing is not strong enough and it creates an imbalance comes.
  • Use a buffing pad properly

Conversion of a bench grinder

When converting the bench grinder you don't have to pay much attention, because it was built for a very similar purpose as a polishing bench.

  1. Remove all covers from the grinding wheels. With some machines this can only be done by force and irreversibly. Please note: You must never use the machine as a grinding machine again without covers.
  2. Unscrew the existing grinding wheels. Replace these with polishing pads. Mount a disc with threads for pre-polishing on one side and a nettle disc on the other for main polishing. So you can switch between the two panes if necessary. You usually need a special key to dismantle the grinding wheels. Which can be found in the instructions for your grinding machine. Mostly they are hook wrenches or face spanners. Note that the machine has a right-hand thread on the right and a left-hand thread on the left.
  3. You can later replace the pre-polishing disc with the one for high-gloss polishing. Then you can - if necessary - switch between the panes again.

Exactly which discs you need depends on the material you want to polish.

Conversion of drilling machines

  1. If you want to polish with a drill, you have to clamp it very well. It is important that the machine is mounted either exactly horizontally or vertically upwards. Pay attention to horizontal Assembly Make sure that there is adequate space around the drill chuck so that the polishing pad does not hit anywhere. An assembly in which the drill chuck points vertically upwards also makes sense, but a chuck that points vertically downwards does not make sense.
  2. Clamp the corresponding polishing discs one after the other. Note that you can only use quite small disks for drills. These should not be larger than 80 mm in diameter. A mandrel is also required for the disks.

This construction can only partially replace a polishing block.

Take the sanding block for polishing

With a sanding block you can of course only polish by hand, because this is just a block that is usually wrapped with sandpaper.

  1. Glue a layer of foam rubber around the block. Sew a strip of fabric over it.
  2. Place a layer of soft molten tissue around the block. So you can polish small areas very laboriously by hand.
