When the tumble dryer no longer heats up, everyone immediately thinks of broken heating elements, expensive repairs and one quickly believes a "specialist" that it is best to buy a new device. This need not be.

Reasons why the heater stays cold in a tumble dryer

  1. Never forget the banal reasons why the tumble dryer no longer heats up. It could also simply be that it was accidentally turned to a cold setting. Please check this simple option first.
  2. Take the operating instructions to hand and clean the sieves and filters as described there. Clogged filters can lead to incorrect information in the tumble dryer electronics, which means that it no longer heats up.
  3. Test whether the tumble dryer does not heat up only with certain settings or whether the problem always persists. If it only fails to work with settings that are controlled by a humidity sensor, with a setting after the drying time but runs normally, you have a problem with the Humidity sensors. You have to find these and clean them, possibly. change. In most tumble dryers, these sensors are located behind the drum or behind the front cover. If you do not know how to get it, you have to look for dismantling instructions for your device on the net. Most of the time, however, it works with logic by loosening the visible screws and thus dismantling the device piece by piece. The main cause of these defects is the use of fabric softener.
  4. Other possible causes are defective fuse switches, thermostats or simply that soldered joints or plugs have come loose. Look for loosened connections and charred areas. Reinsert loose contacts and replace soldering points if necessary. Often the defective solder joint is not the cause, but the part soldered there is defective and has overheated. So the solder joint was desoldered. In that case, replace the part as well. It's mostly a relay or a thermostat.
  5. The heating element itself can also be easily replaced when the machine is dismantled. The prices for the parts mentioned so far are usually less than 100 €, but of course it makes no sense to simply swap parts for good luck. Measure these with a multimeter or take the removed parts to a specialist and ask them to do it for you.
  6. Expansion vessel defective - what to do?

During heating operation, the volume of the... changes with the temperature.

  7. It gets really expensive if the program selector switch is defective. If you have never turned this by force or if you did not turn it while the dryer was in operation, which is no longer heating, then the switch should not be the reason for the defect. So only replace the switch if the other causes can be ruled out or if it is clearly defective, e.g. B. has charred areas.

There are some companies that have spare parts and manuals for almost all of the popular ones dryer to have. They can often also give you device-specific advice.

Important when the dryer is no longer heating

  • Do not forget that you are dealing with electricity in connection with water. You have no business on the device if you are not familiar with electricity. So always consult a professional.
  • Think of your own safety, disconnect the tumble dryer from the mains and make sure that no one can insert the plug while you are working on the part. An electrical accident is worse than a tumble dryer that no longer heats.
  • You can temporarily bypass a thermostat or a fuse to check whether they are responsible for the fact that the tumble dryer no longer heats up. But this is not a repair. You must replace the part found in this way with a part that meets the specifications of the defective one. Even short-term operation ("just dry one machine quickly") is too dangerous because the tumble dryer overheats and a fire could result.

These instructions are not intended for people who are not familiar with electricity, but rather for specialists who lack specific knowledge about tumble dryers or should help you to check the statements of the customer service.
