Determine weight from density - this is how it's done

  • Bodies weigh different amounts - with the same size.
  • The weight of a body depends on the number of atoms, their weight and their (more or less dense) arrangement in the corresponding body.
  • A measure of this is the physical size of the density. It is defined as mass per volume. In colloquial language, the term "mass" corresponds to the weight of the body.
  • In formulas: d = m / V. Here, m is the mass in kilograms (kg), V is the volume in cubic meters (m³) and d is the density in the consequent unit "kilograms per cubic meter" (kg / m³).
  • The mass (weight) of a body can be calculated accordingly if one knows the volume (as the size of the body) and its density.
  • Calculate the density of a sphere - this is how it's done

Unknown sphere, unknown material - so it lies in front of you. How can you ...

  • For many substances, density values can be found in formulas or table books. You can also look up such values on the Internet.
  • To calculate the weight, change the formula accordingly. The following applies: m = d * V.
  • Make sure you are applying the units correctly.

Calculate the weight of a steel plate - this is how to proceed

  1. First of all, you will need the Density of steel: d = 7850 kg / m³. Note that the density values vary slightly depending on the steel composition.
  2. Then calculate the volume of the steel plate: V = length x width x height. As an example, a plate with a size of 0.8 mx 0.5 m and a height of 2 cm (= 0.02 m) is chosen.
  3. The volume of this plate is V = 0.8 x 0.5 x 0.02 m³ = 0.008 m³.
  4. The mass resp. You then calculate the weight of the steel plate in the example as follows: m = d * V = 7850 kg / m³ * 0.008 m³ = 62.8 kg.

And now all you really need is that Dimensions Your steel plate. So take the tape measure and note that you need the length, width and height in meters.
