TV furniture is available in different variants and styles. There is something for every living room. Since the purchase of fancy TV walls can cost a lot of money, many people decide to continue to live with TV makeshifts and cable clutter. You don't have to, because there is an affordable alternative to buying it. Simply build your TV furniture yourself.

The right location for TV furniture

TVfurniture can take various forms. The best known of these forms are the low or sideboard and the TV wall. The most popular variant of the media wall since modern times has again been a version with a wall bracket for the television screen. In this case, a board on the floor offers storage options and storage space.

  • The following applies to all variants: You must measure the destination of the piece of furniture carefully in advance. The TV wall is a few centimeters away from the wall, but the side and lowboard are usually close to the wall.
  • To determine the dimensions, therefore measure a free wall space that is neither too close to Doors, is still too close to windows. Otherwise complications can arise when opening the window and door.
  • In addition, never build in a heater with a piece of TV furniture. This can lead to the formation of mold and also reduces the heating efficiency, as the warm air can no longer be distributed unhindered in the room in this way.
  • An additional location note: Since a piece of TV furniture depends on a power connection, there should ideally be a socket on the selected wall surface. You usually do not need several, as you can multiply one by connecting a connector strip.
  • Build a TV wall yourself

A TV wall is not just a nice way to have a TV on the wall ...

  • Low- and sideboards do not necessarily have to stand full-surface against a wall. Instead, they can also be used as room dividers that only border the wall at the front. If you don't have a certain amount of free space on the wall, but you do have a large room, then this option is probably one of the most interesting ideas for you.
  • But be careful: In this case, leave the adjacent front side open and also integrate a socket directly so that you can lead cables through. Ideally, route the cables through the shelf itself by integrating holes in the base for all connecting cables. Detach the cables from the devices on the stand and stow them in the board. Slide them through the holes from the inside to reattach them to the devices.

Determine the right size for sideboards and lowboards

Your television stands freely on side and lowboards. In addition to the dimensions of the free wall, the dimensions of your television are an important factor in planning.

  • Caution: The screen dimensions are not the relevant dimension here. These refer to the television minus the frame. But you need the total length and width including the edging. You should therefore measure yourself.
  • In addition to the screen, you also have to measure the floor space. Measure this irregular area at the widest point so that no complications arise later.
  • Attention: Add at least 15 centimeters to these stand dimensions to determine the required depth of your TV furniture. The screen should not just fit into the TV cabinet, but should have space to the front and back. One reason for this is the warmth that modern televisions give off. You don't want to char the wall with your TV screen.
  • Since modern televisions typically have a rotatable screen, you must also consider this aspect when determining the correct size. So that the screen can still be rotated, plan 15 centimeters more in width for side boards and lowboards than the width of the screen.

Wall mount solutions are not directly affected by these issues. There are other points to consider when building TV walls with hanging TVs.

TV furniture with wall brackets - materials and design

TVwalls with wall brackets are not only a beautiful eye-catcher, they also give your television a secure hold.

  • As a rule, a wall panel is made of at least 20 millimeter thick chipboard, at the lower end of which a box is attached for storage purposes. This can be an existing board. You can also build a board yourself from old pallets and sand and paint it for a nicer look.
  • The dimensions of your chipboard wall panel depend on the free wall. The wall panel must be at least as wide as your television is long. Have the panels cut to size at the hardware store and you will save work and time.
  • The choice of chipboard depends on your design ideas. You can buy chipboard with different types of coating, or you can buy raw panels that you can stick on according to your taste. So the TV wall can be in any wood- Bring optics. Pay attention to harmony with other woods in the room - for example the dining table or coffee table.
  • Use screws and dowels to attach the wall panel to the wall surface. To prevent porous plaster from crumbling under the weight of your construction, use screws and dowels as long as possible.
  • You will later attach the television to mounting strips that are firmly anchored in the wall panel with wood glue and screws. Attention: Coated chipboard may only be coated on one side, otherwise the wood glue will not find a hold. When shopping, keep in mind that fastening strips are also required to fasten the wall panel to the room wall.
  • You also need edge strips in the defined dimensions for the wall closure of the construction. Also buy a reinforcement board the size of your TV. Overall, the material for making furniture does not cost you much more than 150 euros.

If you have tools such as a folding rule, spirit level, drill, cordless screwdriver, automatic dowelling machine and circular saw with stop at home, you can now use the building do.

Build a TV wall shell with a hanging television yourself

If you coat the chipboard yourself, this is the first step in the assembly instructions. If you are peeling off adhesive sheets, a squeegee can help you avoid bubbles.

  1. Use the circular saw to cut off one side of all of the mounting strips at a 45-degree angle. This angle enables the construction parts to be hooked in better.
  2. Reinforce the area of the TV suspension with the reinforcement board, which you glue and screw to the wall shell from the rear.
  3. Attach the two wooden strips for hanging the TV to the front of the chipboard. Attach the strips for wall anchoring to the back of the plate. Use Spax screws for all strips that you insert with the cordless screwdriver. Caution: do not insert them too far up or too far down into the strips so that the screws do not tear out of the pieces of wood.
  4. For orientation: the fastening strips for the wall connection must be approximately every 30 centimeters. You also screw fastening strips to the room wall every 30 centimeters, on which the wall panel can later be hung.
  5. At the front of the wall panel, screw the finished floor element from behind, which you have either built yourself or have already owned.
  6. You glue the hanging rails to the wall. Likewise, put glue on the strips on the back of the wall shell. Lift the TV wall together with a second person onto the wall ledges and screw the construction together from behind. Use wooden dowels on the front.
  7. Finally, hang the television into the two fastening strips.

Your individual TV wall is now ready and on your future TV evenings you won't even know where you prefer to look: at the flat screen or your successful self-construction.
