Fishing for pikeperch with dead baitfish

Fishing for pikeperch - general

• Find out if pikeperch are found in and frequently caught in the body of water you plan to fish in. The more there are in it, the more you catch.

• Pay attention to small dimensions and, above all, closed periods! In Bavaria, for example, it has the closed season from 15.3.-30.04., During which it is not allowed to be caught because it spawns at this time.

• The pikeperch is a predatory fish. Hence, it eats other small fish. In addition to the pikeperch, there is also the pike, which is one of the predatory fish, that is widespread in Germany. However, it rarely bites on dead bait fish, so it is unlikely to catch a pike with the method described below.

• Choose your bait fish based on the time of year. In May, shortly after the end of the closed season, pikeperch bite better on smaller bait fish (about 8-10 cm). Increase this size by about half a centimeter per month. In winter you can use larger bait fish (about 12-15 cm).

Important note: Fishing with live bait fish is cruel to animals and is strictly forbidden! Be sure to fish with a dead bait fish and make sure of that!

Fishing with dead bait fish

As described above, you need a roller with a free-wheel function. Let the fishing shop advise you if you are unsure.

1. In the dead baitfish, pierce the threading needle at the level of the dorsal fin and pull the needle through towards the caudal fin.
2. Use it to thread your double hook (one long and one short point at a 90 ° angle) onto the bait fish. You hide the short hook in the fish, the long one should look out so that the pikeperch can be caught.
3. Now hang this on your fishing line. A lead (around 80 grams) is recommended for assembly so that the fish can get to the bottom.
4. Discard the fish. Pikeperch can be found near shelters. Watch out for water lilies or the like in the water.
5. Take a small piece of styrofoam. Score a small crack. Put this on the string and put it in the water. If a fish bites and takes line, you can tell by the fact that your styrofoam is pulled onto the water.
6. Put the rubber rings over your fishing rod. Take a loop from the string and clamp it under the ring. This prevents the wind from blowing the styrofoam away.
7. Set your role to "free running". From then on you have to wait and be patient. With a bit of luck, the catch will soon be successful!
