What are transponders?

Transponders are a combination of the terms "transmitter" and "responder". And that is exactly what a transponder does: it receives and sends signals via radio.

A transponder is a small device that can receive and send signals via radio, usually with a type of key or access function.

A transponder - what exactly is it?

  • In technology, a distinction is made between active and passive transponders. The passive transponders are actually of no interest because they are hardly perceived as transponders. For example, they are in access cards. Passive transponders do not need their own power supply, while active transponders do.
  • Active transponder systems usually have a small, built-in battery that provides the necessary power. Otherwise the transponder can neither emit signals nor recognize them itself.
  • Transponders are used in many areas of technology, but are most often found as locking systems. They serve, so to speak, as a further developed key. The advantage of this is very clear that locks with transponder systems are less easy to crack than conventional key-lock systems.
  • Transponders are usually small and round and made of plastic. Just like a key, it can be easily attached to a key ring. If you want to open the corresponding door, you hold the transponder close to the cylinder, press an integrated button in the transponder and wait for an acoustic signal. Then you turn the cylinder of the locking system and you have access. The locking works in the same way: you hold the transponder on the locking piston, press the button, wait for the acoustic signal and lock the locking piston with a single turn.

  • It is also practical if a transponder is lost, because then the corresponding transponder is simply blocked and can no longer be used. In contrast to a lost key that someone else could find and misuse, this type of locking system is very efficient and straightforward.
  • You can also set the times at which the transponder grants access. This is one of the reasons why many companies are equipped with transponder systems, for example to prevent employees from visiting their workrooms at the weekend. This is difficult to prevent with a key, especially with a master key it is hardly possible to control it.

How should transonders be stored?

  • If possible, transponders should not fall down or be subjected to strong impacts. Because this can break the sophisticated technical locking system that is integrated in the transponder. In addition, the battery can get loose contact.
  • Transponders shouldn't get wet or damp either. Otherwise there may be a short circuit inside and the next time you will stand in front of closed doors because the radio system no longer works.
  • To be on the safe side, transponders should not come into contact with excessive heat and, if possible, be kept away from magnetic fields.
