"Am I underweight?" - Anyone can determine it according to various calculation models, for example according to the BMI or the Brocca index.

Calculate your BMI

The BMI is one of the most common bases for calculating when you want to find out if you are underweight. However, you should note that the BMI is aligned with our society today and is quite generous with excess pounds. Many people therefore have normal weight who should actually lose a few pounds.

  • To calculate the BMI, divide your body weight by your height in meters squared. For a person who is 1.70 tall and weighs 65 kg, that makes a BMI of 65: 1.72=22,5.
  • The 19- to 24-year-olds with a BMI of less than 19 are underweight. A BMI point is added every five years of life, i. H. that the 25 to 29 year olds with a BMI below 20 are underweight. This is how you can find out if you are underweight based on your age.
  • The German Nutrition Society differentiates between the sexes when evaluating the BMI. According to this, a woman with a BMI of under 19 and a man with a BMI of under 20 are underweight.

This is how you can check if you are underweight

The Broca index is much stricter than the BMI. It is designed to classify the weight as the ideal weight, which promises the highest life expectancy.

Calculate normal weight - this is how it's done

You can determine the normal weight or your ideal weight with the BMI or with ...

  • If you are a man, your normal weight is your height in inches minus 100. If you are a woman, subtract another 10% from that. A woman with 1.70 has a normal weight of 170-100-7 = 63 kg.
  • The ideal weight for both sexes is the normal weight minus 10% of this, i.e. 63 kg - 6.3 kg = 56.7 kg for the above-mentioned woman.
  • You are underweight if your Broca Index is 10% below your ideal weight.
  • However, the Broca Index is unsuitable for very small or very tall people.
