What is wax made of?

Candles aren't just made of wax

Earlier candles were always made of wax - beeswax. Since the raw material is relatively expensive, a candle is rarely left today (approx. 0.5% of all candles) from the material. But what are they made of now?

• The torches were made from beeswax even in ancient times. The material was mainly used in churches. The raw material later found its way into the general public. Today candles are made almost exclusively from stearin or paraffin.
• Approximately 10 kilograms of honey are needed to make one kilogram of wax. If all requirements are met, bees press some wax out of their wax glands. If the material is still white at the beginning, it will later turn yellow. The beekeeper obtains the actual raw material by melting part of the honeycomb. This increases the value of the raw material. Honeycombs do not grow back at random.

What else wax is made of

• What wax is made of depends on whether it is an animal, vegetable or synthetic material. Like wool wax and whale rat, beeswax is an animal wax. Sugar cane wax or jojoba oil is one of the vegetable raw materials. D. In other words, the raw material is made from the plants or obtained from the sap of the plants. The vegetable material is often used for cosmetics.
• Synthetic waxes, on the other hand, are made from petroleum. Due to its component paraffin, this raw material is used for shoe polish, impregnation, wax figures, floor wax, ski wax or candles. In contrast to animal raw materials, synthetic and vegetable materials are relatively inexpensive.
