Maypole and May hearts are romantic in May gifts for the beloved. This May tradition is particularly widespread in North Rhine-Westphalia. The maypole is a sapling or branch that is decorated with crepe tape and crepe shoots.

The May heart is a more tree-friendly variant. You make it by filling a heart shape with paper roses. Twist these out of crepe paper and seal them with sewing thread.

  1. Cut out strips. Use scissors to cut strips four to four inches wide from the crepe paper. The longer a strip, the bigger the rose petal you will make from the strip.
  2. Pull the strips apart. Grasp a strip and pull it apart so that a bulge is created in the middle.
  3. Put the strips together. Fold the strip together at the bulge. This should be on the outside.

After wrapping the florets, make the May heart out of cardboard.

  1. Cut out the cardboard heart. Cut a heart of the desired size out of sturdy cardboard.
  2. Cover the heart with crepe sprouts. Glue the front of the May heart tightly with the tinkered crepe shoots. If you have red and white roses, these can be used to create a pattern.
  3. Stick on the back. Optionally, you can also stick flowers on the back. However, this is only worthwhile if you hang the heart so that both sides are visible.

On the May night of May 1st, hang your May heart in a place where your loved one can see it in the morning. Traditionally, you look for a place in front of your window. Take care that nobody steals your present. Foreign May hearts are coveted trophies. Have fun and good luck!
