VIDEO: Convert scale 1: 500
The following calculation method relates to how to convert a scale of 1: 500. However, it can also be transferred very easily to any other scale.
Measure the length on the card
- First you need a length that you can convert. You should therefore determine the length you are looking for on a map.
- See what scale the map is using. We assume that it is a 1: 500 scale.
- Measure the length with a ruler. The scale specification 1: 500 means that 1 cm on paper equals 500 cm in reality.
Convert the scale 1: 500
Once you have determined your length, you can now start converting.
Converting the scale in architecture - this is what you should keep in mind when drawing an architectural drawing
Since the field of architecture is always about larger structures, these can only be ...
- Use the rule of three for the conversion. For example, if you measured a length of 2.6 cm, your formula would be: 1 cm = 500 cm, 2.6 cm = x. According to the rule of three, this means: (2.6 cm * 500 cm) / 1 cm.
- This gives a result of 1300 cm.
- This means that a distance of 2.6 cm on paper corresponds to a distance of 1300 cm in reality.
Calculate the scale backwards - that's how it works
You can also do a backward calculation with this formula.
- For example, if you have given a real length of 700 cm and now want to calculate how many centimeters you have to draw on the paper, then proceed as follows: 500 cm = 1 cm, 700 cm = x. Based on the same laws of calculation as before, this results in the following formula: (700 cm * 1 cm) / 500 cm.
- The result is 1.4 cm. This means that for a real distance of 700 cm, a distance of 1.4 cm must be drawn on the paper.
If you want to calculate a different scale, you only have to replace the "500 cm" in the equation with the respective scale number.
