What is ccm

"ccm" is an abbreviation used in the past for the unit of volume "cubic centimeter". But what does this mean and how big is 1 cc?

ccm or cm³ - cubic centimeters simply explained

In many (older) books or documents that have problems with the representation of exponents, one finds the unit "ccm" for the volume, mostly of liquids.

  • "Ccm" was an earlier common term for cubic centimeters. Similarly, the abbreviation qm was used earlier (and still very common today) for the square meter instead of m².
  • So 1 ccm = 1 cm³ applies.
  • But how is cubic centimeter actually defined and how big is 1 ccm? Cubic centimeter is a unit for volume, i.e. for the volume of space that a body, a liquid or a gas takes up.
  • Volume is always a quantity in three dimensions that must not be confused with an area.
  • ml of water to g - this is how you convert volume to weight

In the case of water, the conversion of milliliters ml, a unit of volume, into grams g, ...

  • For example, a cube has a volume, but a rectangle or square has an area.
  • The easiest way is to imagine the volume "1 ccm" as a cube that is 1 cm wide, 1 cm long and 1 cm high. This cube then encloses a room or has a volume of 1 cm³ resp. 1 cc. Incidentally, this volume roughly applies to a lump of sugar - just measure it.

Convert ccm to ml - very easy with water

In (older) recipes, the required liquids such as water, milk or juice are often given in the unit "ccm", instead of the unit "ml" (milliliter), which is more common today.

  • However, the conversion from "ccm" to "ml" is easy, because 1 ccm corresponds to 1 ml, at least for water and water-like liquids such as juice or milk. So you can confidently use your measuring cup for both volume units.
  • But why is it like that? In fact, 1 liter of water (under normal conditions) takes up a volume of 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³ = 1000 ccm (and also weighs 1 kg).
  • At the same time, 1 liter = 1000 milliliters, or 1 l = 1000 ml for short.
  • Accordingly, 1000 ccm = 1000 ml, i.e. 1000 ccm = 1 l (for water).
