What are attributes?

Attributes are also called attachments and define a reference word in more detail so that it receives further information and properties through the attribute.

  • Both nouns and pronouns as well as adverbs as well as adjectives and participles can be used as reference words.
  • Attributes can be categorized as left or right attributes based on their position.
  • So if an adverb comes before (left) the reference word, it is a left attribute, if it comes after (right) the reference word, it is a right attribute.
  • While left attributes can come before nouns, adjectives, adverbs and participles, this is only possible for right attributes with nouns, pronouns and adverbs.
  • Genitive attribute simply explained

Attributes are one of those problem areas when it comes to German grammar. This …

  • There are also different forms of attributes.
  • An adjective attribute consists of an adjective that usually comes before the respective reference word (for example, "I like honest friends").
  • In the case of a genitive attribute, the attribute is in the genitive and can be placed before or after the reference word (for example, "Your husband's friends were there").
  • If, on the other hand, the attribute begins with a preposition and it comes after the reference word, it is a prepositional attribute ("The friend with the car was nice").
  • So-called appositions would also be possible. To put it simply, these are shortened relative clauses that appear in the same case of the reference word and each follow it ("My friend, the dear fellow, surprised me.").

With the changeover sample one recognizes attributes

If you have a sentence and want to find out all the attributes from it, you can do this with a conversion test.

  • Since attributes are not separate parts of a sentence, but belong to a reference word, they cannot stand alone and must always be rearranged with the respective reference word.
  • Otherwise the sentence would be grammatically incorrect or wouldn't make sense either.
  • For example, if you have the phrase, "I like honest friends," you could also switch to "I like honest friends." On the other hand, "I like friends honestly" would be grammatically incorrect. Thus one recognizes "honest" as an attribute of "days", more precisely "honest" is an adjective attribute.
  • For the example of the genitive attribute ("Your husband's friends were there"), "Your husband's friends were also there" would be possible, but not, for example. "Her husband's friends were there too".
  • The sentence with the prepositional attribute ("The friend with the car was nice.") Would work "Nice was the friend with the car". "With the car the friend was nice" wouldn't make sense.
  • In the last example with the apposition ("My friend, the dear guy, surprised me.") You can recognize the attribute with the Changeover: "My friend, the dear fellow, surprised me." would be correct, "Surprised, dear fellow, my friend has me" against it not correct.
