Garden cress has a hot, spicy taste and is very suitable as a topping on bread or as an ingredient for a herb quark. Hardly any other herb can be grown so easily at home.

So pull the cress

  1. Use a flat container, such as a flat plastic wrapper or a small plate. Put enough cotton wool in the container or on the plate. You can also use cotton pads or paper towels.
  2. Apply plenty of water to the cotton so that it can soak up. Pour off the excess water, but do not squeeze the cotton out too hard.
  3. Sprinkle an even thin layer of cress seeds on top of the cotton.
  4. Place the container in a bright place, for example on the windowsill, but if possible not in direct sunlight. In the warm season you can also put the cress bowl on the balcony or outside, because a slightly pungent smell develops when germinating.
  5. Sow cress with children

Sowing cress with children is fun for everyone and creates closeness to nature. After this …

  6. the cress germinates very quickly. Usually the first germs are already visible after three days. Make sure that the cotton does not dry out. But don't pour too much either. Once the plants have dried up, you can no longer save them.
  7. After about two weeks you can harvest the cress. Cut them off with the stems. However, it does not grow back.

Cress heads - a fun idea for Easter

Spooned out breakfast eggs can be transformed into an original decoration for the Easter table. Prepare these cress heads about two weeks before Easter.

  1. Place the egg shells in egg cups with the opening facing up and use the waterproof pens to paint faces on them.
  2. Fill the eggshells with cotton wool, moisten the cotton wool and sow cress seeds on it.
  3. The cress germinates and grows. It then looks like the heads are growing green hair.

Why cotton wool can replace the earth

  • Cress seeds already contain all of the nutrients necessary for germination and growth. All you need is water and light.
  • Cotton wool can store water very well and therefore provides sufficient moisture.
  • The advantage of cotton wool over soil is that the cress is not contaminated by crumbs of earth.
