Which federal states belonged to the former GDR?
In addition to the eastern part of the capital Berlin, five federal states also belonged to the former GDR. For each federal state you will find a sight which you should definitely pay a visit.
1. Saxony's state capital Dresden used to belong to the GDR district of the same name
The federal state of Saxony, which consists of the former GDR districts of Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), Dresden and Leipzig, has a large number of attractions to offer. The Dresden, Meißen, Leipzig and Bautzen old town are particularly worth seeing.
2. Thuringia is on the territory of the former GDR
Thuringia is also one of the federal states that belonged to the former GDR. Thuringia consists of the former districts of Suhl, Erfurt and Gera. In the photo you can see the Wartburg in Eisenach, where Saint Elisabeth and Martin Luther lived, among others.
3. One of the central federal states - Saxony-Anhalt
The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt consists of the former districts of Magdeburg and Halle. The most important sights include the historic old towns of Quedlinburg, Wernigerode, but also the Magdeburg Cathedral and the Brocken, which is the second highest mountain in the new federal states after the Fichtelberg is. 4. Which federal state still belongs to the former GDR
The federal state of Brandenburg consists of the former GDR districts Cottbus, Frankfurt an der Oder and Potsdam. The latter city is also the state capital. Even then, its landmarks included the Sanssouci Palace shown in the photo.
5. One of the northernmost federal states - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the fifth federal state that belonged to the former GDR. It consists of the former districts of Rostock, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg. The most famous sights of this state include the one shown in the photo Schwerin Castle, but also the port of Warnemünde and the old towns of Stralsund, Wismar and Greifswald.
