Two-way circuit with 2 switches and 1 lamp
You can equip 1 lamp with 2 switches if you find this practical. This is useful if you have stairs in your house or apartment where you want to turn the lights on and off from above and below. A changeover circuit makes this possible.
If you live in a house or a large apartment, you may need to operate a lamp with two switches. This is the case, for example, if you want to install stair lighting or if you want to switch a lamp from two doors in a large walk-through room. In outdoor areas, too, it often makes sense to combine two switches with one lamp. Such a changeover circuit with 2 switches and 1 lamp is easy to install.
Create a circuit from 2 switches and 1 lamp
If you would like to install a two-way circuit consisting of 2 switches and 1 lamp yourself, you should use have extensive basic knowledge of electrics and know how to operate a switch is constructed.
- Remove the fuse from the circuit to which the live line is located and use a current tester to determine whether the line is dead.
- First connect the two toggle switches with each other and use the 3-pin cable for this. On the switch you will find information, this is called a circuit diagram.
- Install the lamp and run the 2-pin cable from one of the switches to the lamp. It must be the switch to which the voltage is applied.
In some buildings it can make sense to switch light sources with more than two switches ...
Check the changeover circuit
- Switch on the fuse. Check whether the light source in the lamp is intact.
- Flip both switches to check that the circuit works as expected.
If the circuit does not work, you have not set up the circuit correctly. If you cannot find the fault, consult a specialist. You should not intervene in the circuit if you have insufficient knowledge of it.
