How to measure your resting heart rate correctly
To ensure that you get usable values when measuring your resting heart rate, a few guidelines must be observed.
- Measure the Pulse in a calm physical and mental state. This is best done in the morning bed even before getting up. Of course, you shouldn't have been dreaming badly as it would increase your heart rate.
- You can measure the pulse on the wrist. Place the index and middle fingers on the outside of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.
- Alternatively, you can also measure the heart rate on the carotid artery: To do this, place your index and middle fingers slightly to the side of yours throat and look for the pulse. This is usually easy to find here because it is still very strong so close to the heart.
- Never measure the pulse with your thumb. This has its own pulse rate and therefore makes the measurement inaccurate.

Normal resting heart rate in women
You can now compare the resting heart rate measured in this way with the normal values.
- Adults usually have a resting heart rate around 70 beats per minute. Values of 60 to 80 beats are rated as normal.
- Teenagers usually have a slightly higher heart rate, around 85 beats per minute.
- For seniors, the normal resting heart rate is around 90 - for women and men about the same.
- Women tend to have a slightly higher resting heart rate than men. The norm values are basically the same as for men.
- Basically, people who do sport have a lower resting heart rate than those who are untrained.
