Use electric wasp trap properly
Wasps are annoying and can even become dangerous if you sting your mouth, for example when biting into cake that a wasp is sitting on. Electric wasp traps promise a remedy - and you can do a lot against wasps anyway, with and without an electric wasp trap.
What you should know about electric insect traps
- Lure electric traps insects by light and either destroy them with electric shocks or hold them in place with adhesive surfaces. These are not special wasp traps.
- All electric insect traps attract the insects very unspecifically, beneficial insects such as pests perish in the traps. For this reason, they should not be used outdoors.
- Most electric traps attract using UV light, so they are only effective on insects that perceive this, such as mosquitoes. Wasps react to UV light and are attracted to them. Blowflies react to heat, so at best they are attracted by the additionally emitted heat radiation (infrared vision).
Wasp traps with and without electricity
Wasps are useful animals, so you shouldn't start a campaign against wasps. As long as you don't hit them, don't stab them. But since small children and pets are at risk from wasps and swallowing such an animal can be dangerous, you should do something about wasps.
- Electric Wasp Trap: The little lamps against Mosquitoes are of little use because the entrance opening is too small, so wasps cannot enter.
- Electric wasp traps cost easily over € 100 and can be purchased under the name wasp destroyer in the catering trade. These are allowed outdoors devices not be used because they kill too many beneficial insects. The bright UV light would also only attract wasps and other animals.
- Specific wasp traps: There are vessels in which you put attractants. The wasps fly into these wasp jars and never come out. You can use sweet liquids as an attractant and add a little vinegar to prevent bumblebees and bees from falling into the trap. If you add detergent to the water, the wasps drown in the vessels.
- Lure away instead of killing: The wasps mostly only bother us because they are attracted to us by food. Place vessels with sugar water and a little vinegar at a distance from the table where you want to eat. That attracts the wasps and they are busy. So the wasps are not interested in your food either on your table.

Bumblebees, bees and wasps are protected species because they have many positive properties. You should never be killed for no good reason, if you do anyway it could even lead to an animal cruelty or environmental crime charges. So it can only be strongly advised against operating an electric wasp trap on the terrace, apart from that they attract animals from all over the area. You will have more problems with it than benefits.
