You have probably heard the word “touché” many times and perhaps even used it yourself. The originally French word is now firmly established in German usage.

What does “Touché” mean?

The word comes from French and means “toucher” in the verb form: “to touch” or “stirred”. For us, however, it is translated as hit, hit, sunk, direct hit. It is pronounced “tuschee”. Sometimes you can also see the spelling “Touche” without the accent aigu. This is often in Social media common because everything “superfluous” is avoided there.

How do you use the term correctly?

You usually use a “touché” when you want to show someone respect, for example for a quick-witted answer or a successful counterattack. If you want to tell someone that they have won the point, the match, and that they are the winner in this situation. If you find the right argument for or against something at a company meeting, colleagues might say “Touché!” to praise you. You can also say “Hats off!” or “Respect!”

Where does “Touché” come from?

The term has been used in French since the end of the 19th century. Century called when a hit, especially in fencing, or is generally done for epee sports. From sport, the use has also expanded to the linguistic area, as there are verbal battles in which you can also land targeted hits.

However, “Touché” is definitely meant in a positive, admiring way and does not mean a diss towards another person. It's more about a witty exchange and is not below the belt.
