- The rule of three is to be presented in more detail on the basis of the following scenario. You get a monthly salary of €1200 and have to work 30 days for it. Furthermore, you know that you earn €12 per day and you want to calculate what percentage this corresponds to.
- Now you have the opportunity to calculate the percentage.
100 % = 1200 €
x% = €12
Now you need the two given Pay cross multiply and then divide by the third component. - That means (12 * 100) / 1200 = 1. This result says that $12 a day is 1 percent of the total. You have now determined the solution using a simple rule of three.

- If you want to calculate a difference, for example in your tax return, you have the option of also determining this using the rule of three. The following example is used to calculate the percentage difference between two tax return amounts. You received a wage tax refund of €300 in 2011 and €350 in 2012.
- Now you need to set up the following approach:
300 € = 100 %
€50 = x%
Now apply the rule of three discussed above again and get a result of 16.67%. That means you received a good 16% more tax refund in 2012.
