Small trees for the garden

A garden without a focal point, be it a shrub or a tree, looks dull and boring. Even if there is little space, there are various ways to set accents with less voluminous plants.

However, you always have to remember that there are legal requirements that regulate the spatial distance to property boundaries and buildings. These can also be specifications from the local authorities that you should be aware of. In this way, disputes can often be avoided and the joy of your own garden is undiminished.

What you should consider when planning

The size of a plant should harmonize with the size of the garden. A mighty tree will overwhelm a small garden and take the sun from all other plants. Remember that a sapling will not always remain small. The rule of thumb is a maximum growth height of 2/3 of the garden width.

Choose your favorites based on site conditions as well. These include the demands on water, soil properties and light conditions. Check the PH value of the stand and adjust the value according to the needs of the tree. You will surely find the respective properties of the planned plants on the internet, or ask the tree gardener about them.

The range of suitable smaller trees is wide

The trellis takes up very little space, but will usually stand at the edge of the garden. It must be laboriously drawn and often comes only for fruit trees under consideration. If it is an ornamental tree, you are spoiled for choice.

Slender trees cast little shade and often grow very slowly. A recommendation for this would be the hornbeam (Carpinus betulus ´Fastigiata). If you have a standard strain in mind, note that these species need to be grown for years and are therefore not cheap. A representative of this species is the willow leaf Pear or the well-known almond tree.

Another specialty is the ornamental apple "Golden Hornet" or the spherical robinia, which is an attractive eye-catcher. A Japanese maple, on the other hand, can even grow in a bucket if necessary and therefore change its location.

If the tree may be a little bigger

There is a rich selection of this genus, if the growth height may reach up to 6m. The trees have a loose crown structure and are easy to grow.
The hawthorn, for example, can be easily pruned and turned into an extravagant plant. The pear is undemanding and the fruits are even edible. There are different growth forms in the dogwood, which is also known as shrub receives.

If you would like to highlight a tree as a solitary plant, the hanging catkin willow (Salix caprea 'Pendula) is very suitable. When planting, however, always remember that in a few years the tree will be big and should bring joy, but no trouble.
