An almost endlessly large sandbox and sparkling water with shallow waves: the Baltic Sea is made for holidays with children. But the Baltic Sea is big. So the question arises: where to go on the Baltic Sea with the children?

To the Baltic Sea with the children: when is the best time to travel

The Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein recorded 4.5 million guests in 2022; the island of Usedom attracted a good million visitors and Germany's largest island of Rügen was also a holiday destination for a good million people in 2022. The German Baltic Sea coast is popular, and not just since the travel restrictions imposed by the corona pandemic.
The popularity of the German Baltic Sea coast is completely understandable; the kilometers of fine sandy beaches are a guarantee for family fun as well as for those seeking peace and quiet. Regular guests certainly have good success in terms of travel time and, above all, preferred accommodation. Families with children, on the other hand, are somewhat more limited when it comes to flexibility.

The absolute recommendation is: If you don't have children of school age yet, you should plan your Baltic Sea vacation with the children outside of the holiday periods. This is particularly evident in the prices for accommodations noticeable. Sometimes, for example, holiday apartments in September on the island of Usedom cost a good ten percent less than in the holiday months of July and August. And September is still a very good travel time for the Baltic Sea - the water temperatures are then still around 16 °C to 18 °C; the daytime temperatures also reach an average of 20 °C, more often even higher.
If it is unavoidable and the Baltic Sea holiday with the children falls during the summer holidays, then it is highly advisable to book in good time, or even better, early. Do not be afraid to plan your vacation for the long term and, if necessary, book your stay on the Baltic Sea a year in advance. It should be at least six months so that you get the right accommodation at a reasonable price.

Baltic Sea vacation with the children in their own country: the German Baltic Sea coast

When it comes to popularity, the statistics speak for themselves, but of course tastes differ. Rügen including Hiddensee, Usedom, Sylt and Fehmarn are all wonderful destinations for spending a holiday on the Baltic Sea with the children.
Nature lovers and all those who like to relax on the beach will feel really at home on Hiddensee. The small island can be reached by ferry from Rügen and Stralsund - private cars are taboo on the island. In addition to the fine sandy beach, the island attracts with a few playgrounds and a small water sports center where surfing and sailing courses are offered.
Of course, Rügen is much more diverse; it is now Germany's largest island. Bathing and digging are common activities, collecting shells anyway. But with the Galileo world of knowledge (an interactive museum) in Binz, the summer toboggan run in Bergen and Karl's adventure village in Zirkow, Rügen also guarantees variety.
Usedom also attracts with beautiful beaches and a very well developed network of cycle paths. A visit to the "upside down house" in Trassenheide promises a funny experience, which provides great photo opportunities. In the same place is the butterfly farm with a good 2,000 tropical butterflies, as well as a great pirate playground.
Fehmarn on the coast of Schleswig-Holstein also has plenty to offer. Especially in the main town of Burg, visitors can expect the interactive science museum Galileo World of Knowledge and the tropical area of the Fehmarn Sea Center with its impressive aquariums full of colourful fisherman.

Baltic Sea vacation with the kids in Poland: Where the little ones are the biggest

The island of Usedom is ideal for holidays in Germany and Poland at the same time, so to speak. As soon as you have reached Świnoujście on Usedom, you are in Poland. The entire Polish Baltic Sea coast has very good family travel destinations on offer.
Kołobrzeg, Międzyzdroje, Darlowo and of course Gdansk are all worthwhile destinations for a Baltic Sea holiday with the children. Not only amusement parks and fun pools are spread out here: there is also a lot on offer for children on the Polish beaches, especially in summer. Then there are large bouncy castles, pedal boat rentals, trampolines and inflated water slides on the beach and the kids can let off steam to their heart's content. And new acquaintances can be made here quickly, because from the end of June to the end of August Polish children also have summer holidays and like to have fun on their home beaches.
The fact is: The Baltic Sea offers numerous attractive places for a successful family holiday. Swimming, water sports, bike tours and eating fish sandwiches are just as popular here as all the many interactive museums and outdoor playgrounds. Compared to Germany, Poland is a bit cheaper as a travel destination, so the journey is a little further. It is only important that you book the Baltic Sea holiday with children well in advance. In this way, accommodation is secured and the anticipation is particularly long.
