In the age of the pocket calculator, mental arithmetic has become more of a hobby than basic knowledge. One of the basic arithmetic operations that will help you in life is the rule of three that you should be able to do, even if you use a calculator to take pictures and share. With the rule of three you can not only calculate percentages, the entire interest calculation is also just a percentage calculation for a year. And that is how easy it is to calculate an increase of 100 percent:

Every rule of three is solvable.
Every rule of three is solvable.

What you need:

  • 1 sheet
  • 1 pen
  • 1 calculator

Increase or decrease

  • The rule of three consists of three sentences that make it clear to you whether you need to multiply or divide. But first you should make it clear whether the result will be more or less with more effort.
  • Do you have a certain number of apples and distribute them among a certain number of children, will each child get more or fewer apples when they have more apples? All right, every child will then get more apples.
  • Do you have a job that requires a certain number of workers a certain number of hours, does it take longer or shorter if you have more workers? Watch out, this is where time comes into play, more workers need less time for the same work, i.e. less time.
  • Now you want to increase a certain value by 100 percent, i.e. double it. Do you need more or less of this value then?
  • More of course, you need exactly as much as you had before.
  • How do you calculate annual interest?

Interest is an important topic in mathematics lessons in the lower grades. The …

Calculate 100 percent more

  • Now the three sentences of the rule of three come into play:
  • They relate two things, here apples and percentages. Write down the two amounts next to each other with an arrow so that the value the result asks is always on the right. You also always have information about the question, which you write below and the result would then have to be entered in the lower right corner.
  • Take an odd number: you have 53 apples and you want to increase the yield by 100%. The 53 apples are the whole and that is always 100%, just like the hour has 60 minutes and the circle has 360 °. If you add a 100% increase to the 100%, you have 200%. So you are looking for the result of the number of apples at 200%: 100% à 53 apples -> 200% à x apples?
  • Now speak the 1st Sentence: "100 percent corresponds to 53 apples" and write 53 on the fraction line.
  • Now comes the 2nd Sentence: "If I only want 1 percent, then I would have to take the 100th part of the 53 apples" and write the 100 under the fraction line.
  • Did they understand that? If you cut the 53 apples so that you get 100 pieces and then only take one piece, that's the 100th piece of the apple pieces, so you have to divide.
  • Now if you do your fraction, you have apples accounting for 1 percent. With the calculator if you get the number 0.53, you can do the math in your head.
  • But you want to calculate the number of apples for 200 percent? Sentence 3: "200 percent is 200 times as much as 1 percent" and you take the fraction with 200 times, so write 200 on the fraction line. You truncate the zeros and then it says: 53 times 2 divided by 1 = 106, if you write it down. A harvest increase of 100 percent corresponds to 106 apples.

The sense of the rule of three with an increase of 100 percent

  • Calculate the interest for one year on your savings at the current interest rate, which you can ask your bank. How many years do you need to have your credit doubled? Now calculate the whole thing again with the inflation rate and then again with a reasonable interest rate of 4%. Not appropriate? How high is the interest rate on your overdraft facility?
  • Would you double your bankroll in this lifetime? How old do you want to be and what interest rate would you need for it? How, you can't figure that out? Yes, of course you can, step by step with the rule of three, year after year, by taking the result of credit and interest as credit for the next year. And now you can do the rule of three.
