Operate the new digital camera correctly

Don't let the professional look of a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) fool you at first. You can take photos with it just as easily as with a compact camera, but if you want more freedom in the settings, you have these options with it.

  • In contrast to most compact cameras, you will find manual operating rings for zooming and focusing here. The zoom ring is always the one that is closest to the camera body, the focus ring sits more towards the front lens of the lens.
  • Digital SLR cameras are especially valued because of the lens change options. Take advantage of this opportunity and buy yourself Lensesthat exactly meet your requirements. In photography shops you can usually borrow the lenses before buying them and test them at your leisure. Some also offer rental services, so you can rent expensive lenses for a few days.
  • The control center of the camera is the mode dial. Here you set the recording mode of the camera. If you do not want to worry about the settings, select the "Auto" mode. Here the camera takes over the setting of the exposure and all other important options and you just press the shutter button. You can take photos like with a compact camera and you can get used to the new camera shape.
  • The "P" (program) mode offers you at least the option of setting parameters that are not relevant to exposure, such as Set the white balance, the focus method or the ISO value, the aperture and shutter speed will continue to depend on the Camera selected.
  • What is a DSLR camera?

You have probably read the term DSLR camera before. This shows ...

  • The mode "A" (Aperture Priority = aperture preselection, with Canon "Av") offers you the possibility to choose the aperture yourself, the shutter speed is selected appropriately by the camera. A small f-number (e.g. B. 2.8) you can achieve a shallow depth of field (the background becomes blurred) and you can take photos without a flash even in low light. A high f-number (e.g. B. 22) grants a great depth of field, but also requires longer exposure times, so that a tripod may be necessary for certain shots.
  • The "S" mode on a digital SLR camera stands for "Shutter Priority" (shutter speed preselection, at Canon "Tv") and allows you to freely choose the shutter speed, the aperture is appropriately adjusted by the camera chosen. You can choose short shutter speeds for fast movements or slow shutter speeds for a softer, not as sharp as possible image.
  • The last mode, "M" (Manual), allows you to set the aperture and shutter speed as you wish. In order to take good photos in this mode, however, you need a sound knowledge of the exact relationship between aperture and shutter speed and must be familiar with the exposure of a photo, because the camera does not give you anything here Aid.

Handle the reflex camera correctly

In addition to knowing the new modes compared to a compact camera, a digital SLR camera is also handled differently.

  • Hold the camera with your right hand on the side handle provided, your left hand holds the lens from below. You look through the viewfinder with your right eye so you avoid accidentally changing settings by pressing buttons with your nose.
  • Most digital SLR cameras also offer you the option of using the screen as a viewfinder, just like with a compact camera. However, an optical viewfinder is always preferable to a screen or digital viewfinder because it captures the image without electronic processing and at the same time the eye of impressions from the environment shields. So you can fully concentrate on your photo.
