Through Norway by motorcycle

Norway is a very long country. Keep this in mind when planning your motorcycle tour so that you have free time to see the places and take in the scenery along the way.

  • Norway is divided into two climatically different areas by the Scandinavia mountain range. On the coast in the west there is a humid and mild climate and it remains ice-free for most of the winter. Behind the Skanden it is drier and the temperature differences between the summer and winter months are much greater than on the coast.
  • It rains mostly on the coast, with the amount of precipitation increasing from north to south. Bergen is very far south and is one of the rainiest cities in Europe. Along the coastal strip it is drier in spring than in autumn.
  • In Norway, a toll is charged for cars on many roads, but motorcyclists are almost always allowed to drive for free. 50 kilometers per hour are allowed within the locality, 80 kilometers per hour outside of town. You can usually go 90 kilometers per hour on the autobahn, but you can also travel 100 kilometers per hour on some signposted routes. Speed checks are frequent and the penalties for driving too fast are high.
  • Basically, you have to drive with lights in and out of town, even during the day.
  • Celebrate the summer solstice at the North Cape - that's how it works

At the summer solstice, big festivals are celebrated in many Scandinavian countries, from ...

  • Deer crossing is a great danger for motorcyclists. Norway's roads are not just about moose and reindeer, but also goats and sheep. Therefore, pay attention to the information signs.
  • A very popular route is the "Trollstigen", in English "Troll Ladder". The route begins near Andalsnes and leads to the top of the pass with an incline of 12 percent. There are some hairpin bends to be taken and an altitude difference of 405 meters to be overcome. About halfway through the journey, the 320 meter high Stigfossen waterfall is crossed. Due to the weather, the Trollstigen is only open in summer and can be skied from June to September.
  • The E69 leads to the North Cape, the northernmost point of Europe. There you can enjoy the midnight sun from mid-May to the end of July. From the mainland you can drive through the North Cape Tunnel, which runs under the sea and is almost seven kilometers long. He will take you to the island of Magerøy, on which the North Cape is located. In the tunnel there are inclines of up to nine percent in some places.
  • Alternatively, you can also take a Hurtigruten ship, which you can take your motorcycle on. Hurtigruten is the traditional post ship line that departs from towns along the west coast. Bergen is the southernmost station on this line, Kirkenes the northernmost station. The closest port on the North Cape is Honningsvåg, which is about 40 kilometers away.

This way you could combine your motorcycle tour through Norway with a boat trip.
