Difference between compact cameras and compact system cameras
The inexpensive and small compact camera is facing increasing competition. This is called a compact system camera and is becoming more and more popular. The difference is marked by the larger sensors and the ability to use interchangeable lenses.

Until a few years ago there were only SLR cameras and compact cameras are known. Both systems were retained into the digital age. The price difference was always considerable and so the SLR camera was considered the professional tool, while the inexpensive sector was more interesting for the amateur.
- In order to keep the camera light and handy as well as cheaper, the manufacturer of a compact camera does without a mirror, interchangeable optics and usually also an optical viewfinder. The image sensor is cheaper and therefore also has fewer pixels, which is reflected in a lower level of brilliance.
- Most noticeable with a compact system camera is the use of interchangeable lenses. This brings the compact system camera closer to the DSLR camera (digital single lens reflect). In contrast to this, however, it does not have a mirror and is therefore smaller, lighter and cheaper.
The difference and the equipment
- The system camera serves the ambitious amateur photographer as well as the professional with a system that can satisfy increased demands without being too expensive. The interchangeable optics allow a much wider range of image composition. A greater depth of field can be used in a targeted manner and the large sensor guarantees high-quality images with high color fidelity.
- There is usually no optical viewfinder, which saves weight and costs. The range of accessories is much more extensive than that of the compact camera. Although significantly heavier than this, the compact system camera is still so handy that it can be an indispensable companion in everyday life as well as for sports and games or on vacation.
- There is currently no uniform name for the various types of compact system cameras. One finds the terms "Compact System Camera", "Mirrorless System Camera", "Digital System Camera" or "Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens Camera". The differences are rather small.
- In order to get an overview of the performance and the prices, it is advisable to read the Test results which are published regularly by the major trade magazines or consumer portals. Development in this area is still in its infancy and is being promoted on all sides.
