Facebook: Request memorial mode for deceased persons

With the death of a person, there are many tasks for family members and friends that must be dealt with during the period of mourning. If the person has an account on Facebook, action is necessary here too. The company provides the commemorative mode for this purpose. You can find out how to apply for this here.

Report the deceased to Facebook

  1. Call the Facebook- Commemorative mode page in your browser. You do not have to be logged into the social network yourself to do this. You will now find a form in which you enter the name that e-mail-Address and the URL to the Facebook-profile can register.
  2. If you do not have the e-mail address, please ask friends and acquaintances of the deceased, whether they can help.
  3. To reach the URL, you need to go to the person's public profile. You can find this over search enginesin which you enter the name of the deceased. You can also ask a friend of the person who was connected to you via Facebook. If they switch to the profile page, they will also receive the appropriate URL. This can simply be copied from the upper window in the browser and pasted into the form.
  4. Finally, you must also provide your e-mail address and then submit the form. Note that the Facebook staff will not be able to respond to the report immediately and expect a waiting period of a few days.

What the commemoration mode does

  • If you request that a deceased person's Facebook profile be put into Commemoration Mode, you are changing the publicity of the page. Because if the mode is switched on, only confirmed friends can switch to the deceased person's profile to leave a few thoughts there. The overview is not available to other people.

  • In addition to the commemorative mode, you also have the option of deleting the entire profile. To do this, you can contact Facebook again using the form and provide the additional information. Please note that a complete deletion can only be requested by close family members. This includes partners, parents, siblings and children.
