What does a solvent do in acrylic paints?

  • In every acrylic paint there are of course color pigments with which you can create a wide variety of effects. However, this color powder should not crumble off the painting surface immediately when it is used, but rather stick to the painting surface. Therefore a binding agent is added.
  • However, these binders have the effect of clumping the color pigments. In this way, the paint sticks to the brush and can also be applied with a roller.

Other ingredients for the acrylic paint

  • Some binders are added in powder form. These sometimes only solidify after the solvent has been added. Therefore mix these two components with water. With the appropriate color powder you will then have simple instructions for making acrylic paint.
  • But now you need another component so that your paint does not dry too quickly and you can apply it in peace. The "retarder", for example in the form of glycerine, provides a remedy here. You can buy glycerin from craft stores and pharmacies.
  • The solvent water then keeps the entire mixture "liquid" and evaporates again after the paint has been applied.
  • Acrylic paint: waterproof - this is how you use it to design stretcher frames

  • This allows the color to solidify and depict your desired motif directly on your painting surface. After application, however, you can only remove it with sharper solvents.
  • If you want to give the color surface a little extra shine or if you prefer to make it appear matt, then you can additionally influence the appearance of your picture with a fixative or protection.

The removal of stains on carpets and textiles

In the event of color stains on the carpet or on textiles, you should react as quickly as possible and clean them as quickly as possible. Because the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to remove the paint.

  • First, take some paper towels and use them to soak up as much paint as possible. However, do not rub the paint, just pick it up lightly.

  • Now you can soak a rag with a little alcohol as a solvent and dab off the stain. Do this until no more paint residues can be picked up. In doing so, too much alcohol should not penetrate the fabric fibers.

  • You can still dab the stain with a wet sponge that you have soaked in a little water and washing-up liquid, and so on to work on removing it. Then let the damp spot dry.
