Windows will automatically open zip files

1. To do this, open your workstation or start Windows Explorer with the key combination Windows + E.

5. You can also add new files or folders to the zip file. To do this, open a new Windows Explorer window and go to the folder where the files are located. Then simply drag the files with the left mouse button pressed into the still open window in which you can see the contents of the zip file.

Extract zip files via Windows

Alternatively, you can extract the files and folders contained in the zip file into a folder. This process is known as "extracting".

1. Open your Windows Explorer and go to the folder where the zip files are located.
2. Now either double-click on the zip file or select the zip file with a single left click.
3. Now click on "File" in the menu at the top left. If you are Windows Vista or Windows 7 you may not be able to see the menu by default. Then press the Alt key on your keyboard beforehand.
4. Then select the "Extract all (files)" item.
5. A small window will then open with which you can specify the storage location. By default, the zip file is unpacked in the same folder and the files are saved in a new folder based on the file name of the zip file. For example, if the zip file is called "Archiv.zip", the files will be extracted in the "Archive" folder. You can specify the storage location with a click on "Search", but also individually.
6. "Show files after extraction / Show extracted files" is also activated by default. In case you don't want that after the successful Unzip the files are displayed in a new Windows window, you have to remove the check mark.
7. Finally click on "Finish" or "Extract" to start the unpacking of the zip file.
