Make glass pictures in the Bauhaus style

Bauhaus is not just the name of the do-it-yourself wholesale market in your city. It was a major art movement that influenced many areas of art and everyday life with its simplicity and functionality. You can produce glass pictures like the ones created by the Bauhaus artist Albers in your own creativity and with few resources.

A glass picture, as made by Josef Albers as a representative of the Bauhaus style, is feasible for you even if you are not an experienced painter. The reason is that this style is very simple and works with straight lines and large, colored areas.

Bauhaus in a modified form

Albers did not paint the surfaces of his glass pictures correctly. He chose opaque glass and used a fine sandblast to give it a satin finish. You don't have to do this, it would also take a lot of effort. After all, the only important thing about Bauhaus is that you understand the nature of the forms and Colours capture it on the glass and process it into a new work of art for yourself. Just paint the color on the panes of glass.

  1. First, think about which colors you want to paint on your glass pane and in what form this should be done. It makes sense if you make a sketch.

  4. First, mask off the inner square with the painter's tape. This gives you very straight shapes.
  5. Color them in and let the surface dry.
  6. Once the paint has dried, remove the masking tape and prepare the next, larger square.
  7. If you do not want to have absolutely straight outlines of the squares, you can also easily paint the shapes freehand.
  8. For a good sight it is important that you always wait a little before you paint the next larger square around the smaller one. This will prevent the colors from bleeding along the edges.

Glass pictures glued in mosaic style

If you don't like working with paint and brush, try one of the mosaic pictures that Albers made in the Bauhaus style.

  1. You should prepaint the plywood panel with a good covering base color. This gives you a closed surface on which the colored mosaic stones appear particularly rich in contrast.
  2. Use scissors to separate the individual pieces of the mosaic from the net structure that connects them.
  3. Place the stones on the plywood sheet so that you have areas of different sizes with stones of the same color. In some places the surfaces can touch, in others not.
  4. The edge need not be a straight line of stones. This is done by the plywood board and later perhaps a suitable frame.
  5. Glue each stone in place with a dollop of glue from the hot glue gun.
  6. Make sure that the tiles are always the same distance apart. If you glue several of a single color at the same time, you can forego cutting the carrier net and glue them on completely.
  7. Wait until the glue has completely dried and check again whether all the mosaic stones on your glass pictures hold properly. Only then do you set the picture upright.
