The concept of the epoch

The term epoch is used in different contexts.

  • Epoch comes from the Greek and means something like stopping point. The word denotes a period of time, strictly speaking the beginning of a period of time. A special event is usually associated with such a new period of time.
  • There is often talk of an epoch, especially in a historical context, and also in the literature, fine arts or music, but also when it comes to geological history, one speaks of epochs. Colloquially, the term is used in many other contexts, be it that the department head in the company retires and the superiors talk about the end of an era or the mayor of a municipality does not appear after decades and thus an era is over goes.

Changing epochs - what is it?

Changing epochs is a term that schoolchildren in particular come across more often, but it can also play a role in adult education.

  • The division into time segments is often controversial because the end of a time segment and the beginning of a new one often cannot be clearly defined. The term epoch change therefore also describes the eventful time between two more or less clearly defined epochs. The designation can be found in the story or use in the arts, but the term primarily plays a role in literature and here in German lessons in upper secondary schools.
  • Romantic era - interesting facts about the literary trend
