Catkins or pussy willows belong to the large genus of willows. They are available in a wide variety of sizes, be it the weeping willow up to 30 meters high or the small ornamental shrub for the garden. The harbinger of spring, which provides the insects with plenty of food after winter, is a fairly undemanding companion and thrives splendidly without much effort.

Catkins are undemanding and very resilient.

Catkins are enough sun and water

  • You can plant catkins in your garden without hesitation, be it in the race, on the edge of the pond or as a hedge on the fence.
  • The location for the pasture should, however, be sunny. Partial shade is also very suitable for kittens.
  • Also, make sure that the soil is not too chalky. Catkins prefer acidic to normal soil and very moist soil for them to come off well and thrive.
  • After planting the ornamental shrub, which you can get from specialist shops, you should water it regularly and sufficiently. The soil must never be too dry.
  • You can also just stick willow branches that you pick in a pasture into moist soil. The small cuttings come on very quickly if you have enough water. This is a quick and easy way to plant hedges or braid the willow branches in the fence.
  • Early flowering trees - this is how you care for the pussy willow

Cut back the kittens after flowering

  • Catkins and others Pastures are not very sensitive when it comes to pruning. The pollarded willows, which sprout wild in spring, are the best example of this.
  • Most catkins do not need to be pruned, however. It is enough to remove dead twigs and branches.
  • An exception are hanging and small-stemmed catkins. You have to cut back these radically immediately after flowering, as they sprout very strongly. You don't need to be squeamish about this.
  • If you do not prune the catkins, only a few kittens will grow back in the following year and the crown will be too dense for the small trunk.
